Thoroughly at home in the world of oratorio, Wilfried has covered much of the standard repertoire, singing the bass parts in Bach’s Passions, Haendel’s Messiah, several Mozart masses including the Requiem, Haydn masses and oratorio (Schöpfung, Jahreszeiten, Stabat Mater), Mendelssohn’s ‘Elias’ and ‘Paulus’, Dvorak’s ‘Stabat Mater’, Verdi’s ‘Requiem’, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria or Bruckner’s ‘Te Deum’.
In opera he has shown himself as an ardent performer of Gounod’s ‘Méphistophélès’ (Faust) , Bizet’s ‘Escamillo’ (Carmen) , Donizetti’s ‘Dulcamara’ (Elisir d’Amore) or Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’. He has sung all of Verdi’s aria’s for bass-baritone with several distinguished orchestras. He recorded an album with French Opera Arias, that was widely acclaimed. Today, he’s gradually turning to the Wagner repertoire – singing the Heldenbaritone repertoire (Dutchman).
In Lied he has a love for the music of Franz Schubert, performing the complete 17th Bärenreiter Album – Lieder für Bass – at Concertgebouw Brugge. He is also an advocate of the music of English composer/war poet Ivor Gurney. In the French repertoire he has given recitals performing the Don Quichotte songs by Ravel, Ibert and Massenet.
